Section 210 The Indian Contract Act, 1872

Section 210 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 deals with the termination of an agent's authority and its effect on sub-agents.

📜 Section 210 – Termination of Sub-agent’s Authority

"The termination of the authority of an agent causes the termination (subject to the rules regarding sub-agents) of the authority of all sub-agents appointed by him."

🔍 Explanation:

When the main agent’s authority ends, the authority of any sub-agent appointed by that agent also comes to an end, unless otherwise provided by specific rules (such as ratification or express consent from the principal).

Key Points:

A sub-agent’s authority is dependent on the authority of the main agent.

Once the main agent's role ends (due to revocation, expiry, death, etc.), the sub-agent also loses authority.

This rule ensures clear chains of responsibility and control.

💡 Example:

A is an agent for B and appoints C as a sub-agent. If B terminates A’s agency, then C’s authority automatically ends—unless B had directly approved C’s appointment or retained him independently.
