🏛️ Legal Framework

Oman's IP regime is primarily governed by

Industrial Property Rights Law (IPRL):Royal Decree No. 67/2008 regulates patents, utility models, industrial designs, trademarks, geographical indications, trade secrets, and layout designs of integrated circuits

Copyright and Related Rights Law: Royal Decree No. 65/2008, amended by Royal Decree No. 132/2008, governs the protection of literary, artistic, and scientific works. These laws are enforced by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP), which has established a National Intellectual Property Office and an inspections and enforcement department 

📚 Copyright Protection

Automatic Protection Copyright arises automatically upon the creation of an original work fixed in a tangible medium.

Duration The protection lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years.

Registration While not mandatory, registration with MOCIIP provides additional legal benefits and serves as evidence of ownership.

🛡️ Trademark Protection

*Registration: Required for protection; Oman follows a first-to-file system.

*Duration: 10 years from the filing date, renewable indefinitely.

*Opposition: A two-month opposition period exists from the publication date of the application.

💡 Patent Protection

*Eligibility: Inventions must be novel, involve an inventive step, and be capable of industrial application.

*Duration: 20 years from the filing date.

*Application Process: Filed with MOCIIP; includes a description of the invention and a petition.

*Examination: Public examination opens 18 months after the filing date.

🖼️ Industrial Design Protection

Eligibility: Designs must be new and have individual character.

Duration: Initial protection for 5 years, renewable for two additional 5-year periods, totaling up to 15 years.

Registration: Required for protection; Oman is not part of the Hague System for international design registration.
