Intellectual Property Laws at Liberia

Liberia has established a comprehensive legal and institutional framework to protect Intellectual Property (IP) rights, aiming to foster innovation and economic growth. Here's an overview of the key aspects of IP laws and enforcement in Liberia:

🇱🇷 Liberia's Intellectual Property Legal Framework

Liberia Intellectual Property Act, 2016

The primary legislation governing IP in Liberia is the *Liberia Intellectual Property Act of 2016.   This Act consolidated and replaced the previous Copyright Act of 1997 and the Industrial Property Act of 2003, forming Title 24 of the Liberian Code of Laws Revise.   It provides protection for:

Copyright and Related Rights   Covers literary, artistic, and musical works, as well as performances and broadcast.

Patents   Protection for new inventions that are industrially applicable.

Trademarks   Signs capable of distinguishing goods or service.

Industrial Designs   Aesthetic aspects of product.

Utility Models   Protects new technical inventions with a shorter term than patent.

Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Expressions   Recognizes the rights of communities over their traditional knowledge and cultural expression.

Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits   Protection for the three-dimensional disposition of elements in integrated circuit.

*Influencer and Media Campaigns:   Utilizing social media influencers and weekly radio segments titled "Intellectual Property Hour" to disseminate information about IP rights.

*Partnerships for Enforcement

In a groundbreaking move, LIPO has initiated a partnership with the Liberia National Police (LNP) to enhance the enforcement of IP law.    This collaboration includes integrating IP education into the Police Academy's curriculum and establishing a specialized police unit to address IP-related cries.
