Artificial Intelligence law at Suriname

Suriname is actively developing its approach to artificial intelligence (AI) through strategic planning, legislative initiatives, and technological adoption.

National Digital Strategy 2023–2030

Suriname's National Digital Strategy, launched in September 2023 by the Presidential Working Group on e-Government in collaboration with the UNDP, outlines a comprehensive framework for digital transformation. The strategy emphasizes inclusivity, international collaboration, and the strategic deployment of digital tools and resources to drive economic prosperity, enhance public service delivery, and foster social well-being. Key priorities include strengthening digital infrastructure, providing affordable and accessible internet, and delivering digital identity systems to support the digital economy and public service delivery (Digital Watch Observatory).

AI Policy and Regulatory Developments

Suriname's approach to AI regulation is taking shape through executive actions and proposed legislation, focusing on risk-based frameworks, transparency, and ethical considerations. The country is exploring the use of AI agents for automating repetitive tasks in businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to enhance efficiency and competitiveness (AI World, Apptastic).

Additionally, Suriname is participating in international dialogues on AI governance, such as the Geneva Dialogue on Responsible Behaviour in Cyberspace and the Convention on AI and Human Rights, to align its policies with global standards .(Digital Watch Observatory)

Legislative Initiatives and Challenges

The Suriname National Assembly has been undergoing a digital transformation to enhance efficiency and transparency. Challenges faced include adapting to new technologies, implementing digital solutions for remote operations, and addressing legal frameworks that were not initially prepared for digital transformation. The Assembly is exploring the use of AI and big data to improve the accessibility of parliamentary information and streamline legislative processes .(LegisTech Library, LegisTech Library)

AI in Education and Industry

Suriname is at the forefront of technological advancement with the adoption of Spatial AI and Extended Reality (XR) technologies. These technologies are being integrated into education and industry sectors to enhance learning experiences and improve operational efficiency. The implementation of XR technologies, encompassing both Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), is set to transform the educational and industrial sectors, providing new opportunities for interaction and learning .(EON Reality)

Future Prospects

Suriname's commitment to integrating AI and digital technologies is designed to expand the knowledge base of its workforce and prepare for a future driven by cutting-edge technology. The country's participation in international AI governance dialogues and its efforts to modernize legislative processes indicate a proactive approach to AI regulation and implementation. As Suriname continues to develop its AI policies and infrastructure, it aims to create a digitally transformative environment that benefits all citizens.
