Motor vehicle Laws Armenia

Armenia has established comprehensive motor vehicle laws to ensure road safety and efficient traffic management. Key aspects include:

Driving Regulations

Driving Side: Vehicles operate on the right-hand side of the road.

Minimum Driving Age: The legal age to obtain a driver's license varies by vehicle type:

Motorcycles: 16 years for motorcycles up to 50 cc; 17 years for motorcycles over 50 cc and up to 150 cc; 18 years for motorcycles over 150 cc.

Automobiles: 17 years for vehicles up to 3,500 kg.

Speed Limits

Speed limits in Armenia are generally as follows:

Urban Areas: 40–60 km/h (25–37 mph)

Rural Roads: 110 km/h (68 mph)

Highways: 120–130 km/h (75–81 mph)

Always observe posted signs, as limits can vary.

Alcohol Consumption

Armenia enforces strict regulations on driving under the influence of alcohol. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.02% (0.1 milligrams per liter of exhaled air). Exceeding this limit can result in severe penalties.

Seat Belts and Child Safety

Seat Belts: Mandatory for all occupants.

Child Restraints: Children under 10 years must use appropriate child safety seats and be seated in the rear.

Mobile Phones

Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless a hands-free system is employed.

Road Signs

Armenia's road signs are similar to those of other post-Soviet states and most European systems. The Ministry of Transport regulates these signs, while the police enforce them. Road signs are categorized into warning, priority, prohibitory, mandatory, special regulation, information, service, and additional signs. Inscriptions on road signs are in Armenian and English, and the "STOP" sign is bilingual ("ԿԱՆԳ" and "STOP").

Traffic Enforcement

Armenian police actively enforce traffic laws, including speed limits, alcohol consumption, and seat belt usage. Violations can lead to fines, license suspension, or other penalties.

Adherence to these regulations is essential for safe and lawful driving in Armenia.
