Jharkhand HC Begins Pilot of AI-Powered Case Summary Generation

In a groundbreaking move, the Jharkhand High Court has launched a pilot project to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for generating case summaries. This initiative, which began in April 2025, aims to streamline the judicial process, reduce backlog, and improve efficiency in the delivery of justice. By leveraging AI, the High Court intends to enhance its case management system, enabling faster case processing and better accessibility for litigants and lawyers.

Background of the Pilot Project

The need for technology-driven innovations in the Indian judiciary has been increasing, given the enormous case backlog and slow judicial proceedings. As part of the National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the judiciary, various courts in India are exploring tech-driven solutions. The Jharkhand High Court has now become one of the pioneering courts to adopt AI-powered tools.

The pilot project will begin by applying AI to generate summaries of pending cases, focusing on case facts, issues, evidence, and judgments. Initially, this will be tested on a select number of cases to evaluate the AI system's efficiency and accuracy before full-scale implementation.

By integrating AI into the judicial process, India is also following the global trend, with countries like Singapore and Estonia already using AI to improve court systems. The adoption of AI is expected to build on the digitization of court records, a key aspect of the e-Courts Project.

Looking Ahead: Potential for Expansion

If successful, this pilot project could pave the way for the wider adoption of AI in the judiciary. Courts across India could adopt similar technologies to tackle the growing backlog of cases and reduce delays in the justice system. The Jharkhand High Court’s project is particularly significant as it demonstrates that technology can be a tool for improving the efficiency of the justice delivery system without compromising fairness.

The National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), which tracks the number of cases in Indian courts, shows a significant increase in pending cases, particularly in high courts and lower courts. Implementing AI-powered case summarization systems could be a game changer in alleviating some of this backlog.
