IPC Section 358 deals with Assault or criminal force on grave provocation.

📜 Text of Section 358, Indian Penal Code:

358. Assault or criminal force on grave provocation.
Whoever assaults or uses criminal force to any person on grave and sudden provocation given by that person, shall be punished with simple imprisonment for a term which may extend to one month, or with fine which may extend to two hundred rupees, or with both.

Triggered by grave and sudden provocation, and

The provocation was given by the person who was assaulted.

It recognizes human impulse in extreme emotional situations, where a person may lose control due to sudden provocation.

📝 Example:

If someone is suddenly insulted or provoked in an intense manner (e.g., a deeply personal verbal insult), and they slap the provocateur in that moment, the act may fall under Section 358.
