"Whoever drives any vehicle on a public way in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life, or to be likely to cause hurt or injury to any person, shall be punished."

Who can commit this offence?

Any person driving a vehicle (motor vehicle, cycle, horse carriage, etc.) on a public road or public place.

Rash or negligent driving:

The driving must be so rash or negligent that it endangers human life or is likely to cause hurt.

Rash means reckless or careless, ignoring safety.

Negligence refers to failure to exercise proper care.

Public way:

The act must occur on a public place or road where people have the right to travel.

Result:

There doesn’t need to be actual injury.

If the act is likely to cause injury, it is enough.

Punishment

Imprisonment of up to 6 months, or fine, or both.

Example

A driver speeds through a crowded street, swerving dangerously and almost hitting pedestrians.

Even if no one is actually hurt, it is rash driving, punishable under Section 279.

Riding a motorbike carelessly on a highway, overtaking recklessly, putting other drivers at risk.
