IPC Section 185
IPC Section 185 deals with:
Illegal purchase or bid for property offered for sale by authority of public servant
Full text of Section 185 IPC:
"Whoever, at any sale of property held by the lawful authority of a public servant, illegally purchases or bids for the property, either in his own name or in the name of another, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both."
Explanation:
Applies to auctions or sales conducted by public servants, like property auctions by government officials or authorities.
If someone illegally bids or buys property at such a sale:
Either in their own name or on behalf of someone else,
Knowing that the act is prohibited by law or rules,
They are liable under this section.
Punishment:
Imprisonment (simple or rigorous) up to 2 years,
Or fine,
Or both.
Example:
If a government officer arranges a public auction and a person who is disqualified from bidding (due to a conflict of interest, legal bar, etc.) still participates and wins the bid — they can be punished under Section 185 IPC.
