IPC Section 168 — Causing fear or alarm to the public, inducing a person to commit breach of the peace

Text of Section 168 (Simplified):

Whoever unlawfully causes any fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public, whereby any person is induced to commit a breach of the peace, or to assault another, or to commit an offence, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both.

For example, shouting “There is a fire!” falsely in a crowded market causing stampede and injuries.

To maintain public peace and order by preventing people from creating unnecessary panic or fear that leads to violence or law-breaking.
