IPC Section 166

IPC Section 166 deals with the public servant disobeying law, with intent to cause injury to any person.

🔹 Section 166 – Public servant disobeying law, with intent to cause injury to any person

"A public servant who, knowing that he is bound by law to do a certain thing, intentionally omits to do that thing, with intent to cause, or knowing it to be likely that he will cause, injury to any person, commits an offence."

✅ Key Elements:

The accused must be a public servant.

The public servant knows he is bound by law to perform a duty.

The public servant intentionally omits or refuses to do that duty.

The omission is with intent to cause injury or with knowledge that injury is likely.

🔸 Punishment:

Imprisonment up to 3 months, or

Fine, or

Both

Example:

If a police officer intentionally refuses to register an FIR or take action, knowing the law requires him to do so, and such refusal causes harm to someone, he can be charged under Section 166.
