Woman laws at Grenada
Grenada has established a legal and institutional framework aimed at promoting gender equality and protecting women from violence. Here's an overview of the key laws, policies,
Constitutional and Legal Protections
The Constitution of Grenada (1973) serves as the supreme law, guaranteeing fundamental rights and freedoms for all individuals, including the right to life and security. It prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, place of origin, political beliefs, color, or creed, thereby providing a constitutional basis for gender equality.
Domestic Violence Act (2010) enhances protection for victims of domestic violence by introducing protection orders, occupancy and tenancy orders, and provisions for counseling. It broadens the scope to include individuals in visiting and dating relationships, not just cohabiting partners.
Criminal Code Amendment Act (2012) recognizes spousal rape as a criminal offense and addresses sexual offenses comprehensively, including provisions for sexual violence in educational institutions.
Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Response and Support
One Stop Centre for GBV Services: Established by the Grenada Planned Parenthood Association (GPPA), this center provides 24/7 medical, legal, and psycho-social support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It aims to prevent re-traumatization by offering comprehensive services under one roof
National Coordinating Mechanism: Following training on National Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for GBV response, Grenada is advancing towards establishing a National Coordinating Mechanism. This initiative involves key sectors such as health, social services, police, and justice to ensure a coordinated and effective response to GBV.
Victims' Rights Policy: Drafted under the Grenada Spotlight Initiative, this policy outlines the rights of GBV survivors, emphasizing non-discrimination, dignity, privacy, and access to competent services. It aims to eliminate victim-blaming attitudes and ensure a victim-centered approach across service sectors.
Gender Equality Policy and Action Plan (2014–2024)
This national policy adopts a multi-sectoral approach to promote gender equality and social justice. It focuses on equal participation in political, economic, social, and cultural life, and integrates gender considerations into development planning, education, labor, agriculture, tourism, and disaster management. The policy also emphasizes the establishment of a Gender Management System to coordinate and monitor its implementation.
These legislative measures and initiatives reflect Grenada's commitment to advancing gender equality and providing robust support for women facing violence.
