As a Legal Associate in a Media & Entertainment law-focused organization like the Motion Picture Association (MPA), your role would revolve around legal aspects concerning the creation, protection, distribution, and enforcement of rights in media content such as films, TV shows, music, and digital media.
Youโd be working with content creators, producers, distributors, streaming platforms, and regulators to ensure compliance with applicable laws, protect intellectual property (IP), and resolve disputes in the entertainment ecosystem.
๐น Key Responsibilities
1. Intellectual Property (IP) Protection
Copyright law: Advising on copyright ownership, registration, and infringement issues.
Anti-piracy: Supporting enforcement action against illegal content sharing or streaming (e.g., torrent sites, unauthorized OTT uploads).
Drafting and reviewing cease and desist notices, coordinating with ISPs, platforms, and enforcement agencies.
Assisting with litigation, if necessary, against infringers.
2. Content Clearance & Compliance
Reviewing scripts, screenplays, and final cuts for legal risks (defamation, obscenity, invasion of privacy).
Ensuring compliance with broadcasting and OTT platform regulations (including local censorship laws).
Advising on content rating, disclaimers, and legal vetting prior to release.
3. Contract Drafting & Negotiation
Drafting and reviewing a wide range of contracts:
Talent agreements (actors, directors, crew)
Licensing and distribution agreements
Co-production and financing deals
Sponsorship and brand placement contracts
Negotiating rights and obligations between studios, producers, and digital platforms.
4. Regulatory & Policy Advisory
Keeping abreast of evolving media regulations, IT laws, and OTT guidelines.
Advising stakeholders on legal implications of government policies (e.g., digital content regulation, advertising codes).
Engaging with regulatory bodies (like MIB, TRAI) and industry associations (like FICCI, CII).
5. Litigation Support
Coordinating with external counsel for disputes (copyright, defamation, contract breach).
Preparing case briefs, affidavits, and compiling evidence (e.g., proof of infringement).
Managing regulatory proceedings or criminal complaints, especially in piracy cases.
6. Industry Collaboration & Advocacy
Representing the organization in industry panels, working groups, or policy consultations.
Supporting initiatives to promote IP awareness and legal literacy in the media sector.
Engaging in public policy advocacy for better enforcement laws or content regulation frameworks.
