Biotechnology Law at Eritrea
Eritrea does not currently have a dedicated biotechnology law or a comprehensive biosafety regulatory framework. However, the country has engaged in various initiatives related to biotechnology and biosafety, often in collaboration with international organizations.
Biosafety and Biotechnology Initiatives
Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories: Eritrea has participated in regional efforts to enhance biosafety and biosecurity in veterinary diagnostic laboratories. Through the International Atomic Energy Agency's AFRA project, Eritrea aimed to establish and implement biosafety regulations to address threats from zoonotic and transboundary animal diseases.
Medical Devices Regulation: In 2019, Eritrea, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, conducted a consensus-building workshop to develop medical devices registration guidelines. These guidelines were intended to support the National Medicines and Food Administration unit in ensuring the safety and quality of medical devices, including in-vitro diagnostics.
Technology Transfer Agreements: Eritrea's Investment Proclamation includes provisions for technology transfer agreements with foreign investors. These agreements cover areas such as the use of patents, technical training, and the provision of technical services, which are relevant to the development and application of biotechnology.
Intellectual Property and Biotechnology
Eritrea is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and has laws related to intellectual property, including patents and trademarks. The Provisional Commercial Code of Eritrea, adopted in 1993, contains provisions related to intellectual property rights. However, there is no specific mention of biotechnology-related intellectual property in these laws
