Alabama Constitution Section 29 - Titles of nobility, hereditary distinction, etc.; restriction on appointments to office.
Alabama Constitution – Section 29
Titles of nobility, hereditary distinction, etc.; restriction on appointments to office
“No title of nobility or hereditary distinction, privilege, honor, or emolument shall ever be granted or conferred in this state; and no office shall be created, the appointment to which shall be for a longer time than during good behavior.”
Explanation:
Prohibition on Titles of Nobility:
The section strictly forbids granting titles of nobility or hereditary honors. This ensures that all individuals are treated equally under state law, preventing the creation of an aristocracy or privileged class based on birth or title.
Restriction on Lifetime Appointments:
It also prohibits the state from creating offices where the appointment lasts longer than "during good behavior."
This typically refers to appointments like those of judges, who may serve for an extended period but can still be removed for misconduct or incapacity.
It ensures accountability and prevents the creation of positions with unchecked, permanent authority.
