NORTH CAROLINA CONSTITUTION
ARTICLE XIV – MISCELLANEOUS
Section 1. Membership in secret societies.
Any citizen of this State who shall engage in a conspiracy or combine with others to act secretly for any purpose that is unlawful or subversive of public order or the Constitution shall be guilty of a felony and shall be punished as provided by law.
Section 2. Historical property.
It shall be the policy of this State to conserve and protect its historical heritage. The General Assembly shall provide for the acquisition and preservation of buildings and places of historic or architectural value and interest.
Section 3. Marriage.
[Note: This section was struck down and is unenforceable due to federal court rulings.]
Before being invalidated, it read:
"Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State."
Section 4. Effective date of this Constitution.
This Constitution shall take effect on July 1, 1971.
Section 5. Repealing clause.
The Constitution of North Carolina of 1868, with amendments thereto, is hereby repealed, except that the provisions of that Constitution as contained in the Schedule in Section 7 of Article XIV thereof, and in the amendments listed below, shall continue in force to the extent and for the purposes stated in the Schedule:
Amendments of 1873, 1875, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1899, 1903, 1905, 1907, 1909, 1911, 1913, 1915, 1917, 1919, 1921, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, 1937, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, and 1969.
